All This Fuss For A Baked Potato
Would you wait 6 hours for a fancified spud?
Last week, the New York Times reported on a new viral phenomenon taking over London. Bustling potato-based businesses like SpudBros (yes, seriously) and Spudman (no really, I’m not kidding) have begun attracting crowds willing to wait up to six hours in line for baked potatoes loaded with tuna salad and baked beans. SpudBros alone claims to sell about 2,000 potatoes per day.
What exactly is going on here? Starting at about $6, these nostalgic jacket potatoes offer a high calorie-to-dollar ratio for a light lunch or a heavy post-pub snack. But the virality of the baked potato doesn’t begin or end with these practical takeout stops, and I’ve noticed that the Brits aren’t the only people embracing the potato dinner.
